What "Indigenous" Means Here
In this resource, indigenous Christian leaders means local believers who serve among their own people. They share the language, history, culture, and daily realities of the communities they lead.
The term does not suggest that every leader or community is the same. Myanmar's Christian communities are diverse. The common principle is that vision and leadership arise from within the community rather than being imposed from outside.
Why Local Leadership Endures
Language
Local leaders communicate in the language of home, including languages rarely mastered by outsiders.
Cultural Understanding
They understand how decisions are made, how trust develops, and how grief, faith, and community are expressed.
Belonging
They are part of the community's history and future — not visitors with an exit plan.
Continuity
Outside workers and funding cycles change. Local leaders remain.
Multiplication
Local leaders train others who can serve and lead in culturally natural ways.
Access
In conflict or isolation, local knowledge and relationships may reach places outsiders cannot safely enter.
In a Crisis
These strengths matter even more when roads close, communication fails, or outside organizations must withdraw. Local leaders know the conditions, understand the risks, and can adapt quickly. Their presence is not a temporary response to an emergency; it is part of the life of the community.
How SGM Partners
SGM's role is to strengthen work already led by local Christian leaders. We raise awareness and resources, but the vision and day-to-day leadership remain with those who know their communities best.
Our relationships began in 2005, before SGM was formally founded. They were built through time, shared faith, and personal trust—not created in response to the 2021 crisis.
Because present conditions are sensitive, public communications describe the work broadly. Names, current locations, travel details, ministry patterns, and identifying information about vulnerable people are reserved or withheld for safety.
